Karmen
A futuristic, comedic opera on serious themes
utilizing music by George Bizet from Carmen

Karmen, secretly the leader of the underground forces (code named “Gypsies”), hopes to prevent World War IV. She steals a computer chip containing secret war plans. Likely to be searched, she hides it in a flower, which the corpulent Don Jose unknowingly smuggles for her. She promises his heart’s desire, a huge succulent feast, if only he will carry the flower to their rendezvous.

The Lord High Toreador, leader of the ruling, war-mongering Matador Police, traps Karmen and forces her appearance in the Sex Wrestling Matches. There he intends to break her and the spirit of the underground by publicly raping her and having her bear his child in one of the “forced labor” camps.

Karmen utilizes fifteen professional singer/performers and four instrumentalists in a dynamic 2 1/2-hour production. Audio cassette excerpts and an unfinished script are available for production consideration.
