Tall Timber Group Mug Shots

Here are some of the individual groups from Tall Timber Summer Camp, Mohegan Lake, N.Y., shot by a commercial photographer. “Uncle” Mel Coburn, assisted by his wife, Sylvia, ran the camp from 1961-73.

Each group had their own nickname, which lasted the whole summer. Besides a name, the group would make a song for themselves, usually a parody of some well-known tune.

One season, I was counselor for the oldest boys group, who named themselves the “Polar Bears.” “Oldest” meant that they chaffed at the silly stuff more enjoyed by the “children.” So, they resisted making a song. However, they came up with a fun chant (really an early form of rap), which went sorta like this:

We are the Polar Bears, we are cool.
We always obey the Golden Rule.
We listen, we learn, we love to play,
We love to play knock-hocky every day.
Thanks to camper Sharon Senz Eiger, we have the words to the “Robbins” group song:

Sung to the tune of
“When The Red, Red Robin” (original words and music, by Harry Woods)

When the Tall Timber Robins comes bob, bob, bobbin’ along, along,
There’ll be lots of play time, and lots of gay time for everyone.

Get up, put on a happy face,
Cheer up, Tall Timber’s the greatest place,
Sing songs, join us in fun,
Laugh, jump, smile, and be happy.

When the Tall Timber Robins come bob, bob, bobbin’ along.
